A mini-shutdown has finally occurred.
The US government has imposed a technical partial shutdown. The federal government is shutting down for the second time in six months after Congress failed to reach a timely agreement on the annual budget.
The Office of Budget and Management (OMB) is expected to notify federal agencies to begin preparing for the shutdown just after midnight on January 31.
This is because Congress managed to pass laws fully funding some areas—for example, the Department of Agriculture, the legislative branch, and the Department of Justice—while most federal spending remains to be determined.
Senate Democrats abandoned a bipartisan agreement to fully fund the federal government through the end of fiscal year 2026 amid the fallout from President Donald Trump's increased federal law enforcement presence in Minneapolis.
