The Japan Metal Workers' Union is demanding a pay raise, with the increase reaching a record high.
The Japan Council of Metalworkers Union, a major union representing a manufacturer in Japan, said on February 27th that its members are seeking record pay rises in annual negotiations with employers, marking an initial sign of the continued rise in wages in Japan. According to statistics released on Thursday, about 1,416 unions under the Japan Council of Metalworkers Union are requesting an average monthly basic wage increase of 14,149 yen (equivalent to $94.84), with negotiations expected to reach a protocol next month. This demand marks a new high since 2014 when unions began tracking demands, rising by 14% compared to last year's 12,392 yen.
