American senator reaches agreement to end government shutdown
American senators have reached an agreement to end the prolonged government shutdown, according to Politico.
The framework of the agreement, negotiated by Senators Angus King, Jeanne Shaheen, Maggie Hassan, along with some GOP lawmakers, has received sufficient support from the Democratic side to proceed to the next steps. This agreement also involves Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the White House.
According to the agreement, at least eight members of the Democratic Party will vote “yes” on the procedures to ensure enough votes for the advancement of the budget package. The Senate is expected to vote on Sunday evening to pass the temporary bill from the House of Representatives, which will then serve as the basis for the larger budget package, before needing the House's approval to reopen the government.
The agreement package also ensures that federal employees who are laid off during the shutdown will be rehired and receive back pay, while preventing layoffs in agencies until January 30, 2026. Additionally, Democrats will have the authority to decide on the bill to expand ACA (Affordable Care Act) and will vote on it in mid-December.
Some progressive Democratic lawmakers like Bernie Sanders, Richard Blumenthal, and Ruben Gallego continue to oppose the agreement, emphasizing that any deal that does not include healthcare subsidies is unacceptable.
President Donald Trump is optimistic, believing that the end of the longest government shutdown in history is near.
