The Bitcoin scandal has sparked a vote of no confidence that failed to overthrow the Czech government.
According to Gate News bot, Decrypt reported that two weeks ago, the highly publicized Bitcoin scandal triggered a no-confidence vote in the Czech Republic’s parliament, and on Wednesday, the ruling coalition was nearly toppled.
A video from the archives of the Czech Parliament’s Chamber of Deputies shows that the center-right ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala received 98 votes against the motion on Tuesday, surpassing the 94 members of parliament who voted to overturn the government.
Initially, a Bitcoin donation was quietly transferred from the wallet of a convicted dark web drug dealer to the hands of a minister of justice, triggering a minister’s resignation, a criminal investigation, and nearly overturning the Czech government.
The latest vote was conducted among 192 attending members, marking the fourth no-confidence vote since the ruling coalition came to power in 2021.
Fayala’s statement published on platform X shows that the voting “proceeds as scheduled, and the government is able to maintain itself.” Fayala claims that the opposition “is once again using this meeting to spread slander, insults, and lies.”
The focus of this political storm is former Minister of Justice Pavel Blazek. He received 468 Bitcoins from the convicted darknet operator Tomas Jirikovsky, which were worth over $45 million at the time. The Bitcoins in question had previously been seized and were returned to Jirikovsky after legal technical processing.
