On January 21st, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a historic collaboration between OpenAI, Japan's SoftBank, and Oracle to invest $500 billion in building U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure under a project called "Stargate."
Key Highlights:
Largest AI Project in History: President Trump declared that "Stargate" will create the physical and virtual infrastructure for next-generation AI, including data centers distributed across the U.S.
Immediate Deployment: $100 billion will be invested immediately. SoftBank’s CEO, Masayoshi Son, will serve as Chairman of the project.
Construction Underway: Oracle's Larry Ellison confirmed that the first data center project has already begun construction in Texas.
Market Impact:
Stock Reactions:
Nvidia and Microsoft stocks rose over 1% after-hours.
Arm and Oracle stocks climbed by more than 3%.
SoftBank Group surged by 5.7%.
A-Share Market Performance (22nd Morning):
Data Center Power Sector: Sanbian Technology, YuanCheng Stock, and Senyuan Electric hit their limit up, while Haiou Stock, Jinpan Technology, and Xiongtao Stock followed the rise.
CPO Sector: Dekoli and Huiyuan Communication hit their limit up, while Xinyisheng rose over 5%, followed by Shengyi Electronics and Cambridge Technology.
Global AI Data Center Expansion:
According to Synergy Research, major cloud service providers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google account for 60% of the world’s ultra-large-scale data center computing power.
Amazon: Plans to invest $14.5 billion in Japan by 2027 and expand in India, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia.
Microsoft: Data centers planned or operational in New Zealand, Spain, and Kenya by 2024.
Google: Established centers in Uruguay, Norway, and the Netherlands.
Economic and Infrastructure Considerations:
Local Opposition in the U.S.: High electricity consumption, significant land requirements, and regulatory hurdles hinder large-scale data center construction domestically.
Cost Advantages Overseas: Developing countries often provide better energy supplies, supportive policies, and fewer regulations, making them attractive locations for AI computing centers.
