Just updated my SASSA banking details and cellphone number, so let me share what I learned because the process can be confusing if you don't know what to do.

So here's the thing about changing SASSA banking details depending on your grant type. If you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you actually have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office—can't do it online, which is annoying but that's how it works. You need to fill out their Payment Method Change Form and bring your ID (original and copy), plus proof of your new bank account. A bank statement not older than three months works, or get a letter from your bank confirming the account is active and in your name. Important: it has to be YOUR account only, no joint accounts or anything like that.

The SASSA staff processes it and sends it to the bank, which takes up to 21 working days to verify. If you want the change to take effect next month, submit before the 15th. Miss that deadline and you're waiting another cycle.

Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's completely different—everything's online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they SMS you a secure link, you click it and update your bank details right there. Takes a few days to weeks to verify. Same rule though: account must be in your name.

For changing your cellphone number, permanent grant holders should call 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office. For SRD, use their online contact portal—enter your ID and Application ID, add the new number, they send an OTP to verify. Just watch out for fake SASSA websites trying to scam people. Always use the official link.

Honestly, if you're struggling with how to change SASSA banking details or anything else, calling the helpline or visiting in person is usually the safest bet. The online process works but can be glitchy sometimes, especially when changing contact info.
