Just realized a lot of people struggle with updating their SASSA details, especially when they need to change their banking information. So here's what actually works based on what I've learned.
If you're getting permanent grants like old age or disability, you basically have to go to the SASSA office in person—there's no way around it. They need you to fill out the Payment Method Change Form, bring your original ID and a copy, plus recent bank statement (less than 3 months old) or a letter from your bank. The whole thing takes up to 21 working days to process, so plan ahead. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month or you'll miss that cycle's payment.
Now if you're on the SRD R350 grant, that's different. You can actually change your banking details online through the official SASSA SRD portal, which is way faster. You just enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, and you update your account info there. Same rule though—the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts.
For phone number updates, permanent grant holders should call the helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit an office. SRD users can do it through the portal—they'll send you an OTP to verify. Just make sure you're using the official SASSA website, not some random site claiming to help. Scams are definitely out there.
The whole process isn't complicated once you know what to expect. Just don't miss those deadlines.
