Just went through the whole SASSA banking details update thing and honestly it's way different depending on which grant you're on. If you're getting the permanent grants like disability or child support, you pretty much have to go to the office in person—can't do it online no matter what. You'll need your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works), fill out their form, and then wait like 21 days for it to actually process. Pro tip: get it done before the 15th of the month or you're waiting another cycle for the change to kick in. Now if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's the easier route. The whole thing is online through their portal, which honestly makes sense since they process thousands of applications. You just enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS to your registered phone, and you update your banking details there. Takes a few days to weeks for verification but at least you're not sitting in an office for hours. One thing that tripped me up—the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts or anything. They won't pay into someone else's account even if it's family. And if you're switching to cash send instead, make sure your phone number is RICA-compliant registered. Changing your phone number is just as important as updating banking details since that's how they send you the verification codes and payment alerts. For SRD you can do it through their contact portal with an OTP verification, but if the online system gives you grief, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or email them. Honestly the direct contact method is sometimes more reliable than the portal if you're dealing with something complicated. Just make sure you're using the official SASSA links and not some dodgy third-party site—there's definitely scam websites out there claiming to help with this stuff.
