Vučić Admits to Owning Chinese-Made Hypersonic Missiles
After photos of Chinese hypersonic missiles mounted on Serbian Air Force fighter jets leaked on the internet, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić acknowledged on the 12th that the country possesses these missiles.
He stated that the purchase of Chinese hypersonic missiles is part of a $17 billion defense upgrade to counter hostile intentions from neighboring NATO countries.
Vučić told national broadcaster RTS Thursday evening that the country's air force currently relies on Russian-made MiG-29 SM+ fighter jets, which are already equipped with an undisclosed number of CM-400 missiles. These missiles have a range of up to 400 kilometers.
"We already possess a considerable number of these rockets, and there will be more," Vučić said. "They are very expensive and also very effective."
The Serbian president stated that compared to the price Pakistan paid for similar-type rockets, Serbia obtained a "modest discount." Pakistan used these missiles in its conflict with India last year, though he did not specify the price.
The Belgrade-based Tango Six portal first reported on this procurement with photos showing the aircraft mounted with these missiles. According to the website, these missiles weigh nearly one ton and can fly at speeds of up to Mach 5.
Vučić stated that missiles manufactured by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) serve as a powerful deterrent against threats. He said Serbia wishes to maintain good relations with NATO while maintaining a "military neutral" stance that rules out joining the alliance.
Bloomberg reported that Serbia is increasingly relying on China for investment and defense cooperation, marking a shift from previously close cooperation with Moscow.
