Vitalik Buterin: AI era requires cryptographic privacy mechanisms to protect API access patterns

Techub News: Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated that in the context of the increasing popularity of AI agents, cryptographic privacy technologies are crucial for protecting users’ API call patterns and behavioral data. He pointed out that even when using local AI agents, if external services can see all search or API call logs, they can still infer the user’s ongoing activities. Vitalik believes a preliminary solution is to forward requests through a mixnet to hide the source of access, but service providers may require anti-abuse mechanisms and pay-per-call models due to potential DoS attacks. In practice, these payment methods often rely on credit cards or stablecoins without privacy protections. Therefore, he emphasizes the need for privacy-preserving encrypted payment solutions.

He further noted that privacy protection must be considered from a “full stack” perspective, with the local AI agent layer being particularly critical. Vitalik compares this to health span issues: if multiple damaging factors exist, addressing them one by one yields cumulative benefits; similarly, measures to reduce data leakage risks will produce similar compounded effects.
