The US military operation against Iran has failed to garner significant public support. According to the most recent poll conducted by CNN with SSRS, approximately five in six Americans (59 percent) disapprove of the US decision to take military action against Iran, with only 41 percent approving. Strong approval stands at 16 percent, while strong rejection reaches 31 percent.
The poll, conducted between February 28 and March 1, 2026, among 1,004 adults, reveals a sharp divide along party lines: 77 percent of Republicans support the operation, while 82 percent of Democrats and 68 percent of independents oppose it.
The poll also paints a pessimistic picture of the future: 56 percent of respondents believe a long-term military conflict between the US and Iran is at least "somewhat likely"; 24 percent say it is "very likely." President Donald Trump's decision to launch airstrikes against Iran marks a significant decline in public support since the previous similar operation in June 2025. The poll also indicates that a majority do not trust Trump to make the right decisions regarding the use of force in Iran and that congressional approval is needed for further military action.
On the fourth day of the joint US-Israeli operation, Iranian retaliatory attacks continued, with reports of six US soldiers killed. Oil prices surged, global markets declined, and threats against US embassies in the region increased.
These results are interpreted as a strong "stop" signal from broad segments of the public to the Trump administration's Iran policy. While the course and duration of the war remain uncertain, a majority of American public opinion appears to be seeking a peaceful resolution.
