South Korea Protests Over Japan's Island Dispute: Diplomatic Tensions Rise
Last week, specifically on February 22nd, South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong objection to the “Takeshima Day” celebration held in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. This annual event is viewed by Seoul as a provocative move challenging Korea’s sovereignty over the disputed island territory that has been contested for decades. In its official statement, the ministry spokesperson emphasized that Korea’s position will not change on this issue, based on strong legal, historical, and geographical arguments.
Sovereignty Claims and Legal Basis of Dokdo
South Korea consistently asserts that Dokdo—its official Korean name for the Japanese island—is an integral part of its territory. The Seoul government rejects Japan’s claims, which it considers lack a legitimate legal foundation. From Korea’s perspective, geographical location, historical records, and international law all support its sovereignty. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on Japan to cease any activities that could be seen as attempts to claim the territory, including this controversial “Takeshima Day” celebration.
Security Presence and Ongoing Dispute
To strengthen its claim, South Korea has maintained a police detachment stationed on Dokdo. The presence of security personnel symbolizes Seoul’s commitment to the territory located in the Sea of Japan. The dispute over these islands has been an ongoing issue that significantly affects bilateral diplomatic relations between the two countries. Whenever Japan holds events related to Takeshima, Seoul responds with official protests, reflecting the high sensitivity of this issue in Korea-Japan relations.
