South Korea Protests Over Japan's Island Dispute: Diplomatic Tensions Rise

Last week, specifically on February 22nd, South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong objection to the “Takeshima Day” celebration held in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. This annual event is viewed by Seoul as a provocative move challenging Korea’s sovereignty over the disputed island territory that has been contested for decades. In its official statement, the ministry spokesperson emphasized that Korea’s position will not change on this issue, based on strong legal, historical, and geographical arguments.

Sovereignty Claims and Legal Basis of Dokdo

South Korea consistently asserts that Dokdo—its official Korean name for the Japanese island—is an integral part of its territory. The Seoul government rejects Japan’s claims, which it considers lack a legitimate legal foundation.
