A cryptocurrency scam case occurred in Utah, USA. Man Brian Garry Sewell was sentenced to three years in prison for operating an unregistered cash-to-cryptocurrency business, involving up to $2.9 million.

His scheme was not complicated—he fabricated his work experience, educational background, and investment abilities, using these lies to scam at least 17 investors. He operated from December 2017 until April 2024, a total of over seven years.

The court's punishment was not light. In addition to imprisonment, he was ordered to pay over $3.8 million in restitution, including compensation to investors and fines paid to the Department of Homeland Security. This case serves as a reminder that the crypto investment space is full of traps. Those promising high returns and boasting extensive experience should be approached with caution. Conduct thorough due diligence on the background and credentials of investment partners; it’s more important than anything else.

Caught after seven years, the efficiency is truly outrageous. But on the other hand, there are so many scammers in the crypto space, claiming to have extensive experience and insider channels, but they're basically just here to harvest profits from newcomers.

seven years running the same grift before getting caught... the opportunity cost on that fraud probably exceeded his actual take-home lmao. 17 victims tho? sloppy execution, zero operational security. anyway this is why you always verify credentials on-chain when possible, off-chain due diligence is basically theater

Damn, seven years... This guy really treats scams as a career. The returns I’ve earned from my three years of dollar-cost averaging aren’t even as much as he’s scammed, haha. That’s why I’ve always said that in the crypto world, you have to do your own research and not believe everything. $2.9 million... How many people's dreams have been shattered?

Damn, it took seven years to get caught? This guy's really bold, scamming all the way until 2024 before getting exposed.

Caught after seven years of scam, this guy really has some guts. $2.9 million, and he still has to pay back $3.8 million. This deal is a total loss.

Seven years and you haven't been caught? That's outrageous. Your wallet should have been frozen long ago.

nah this sewell guy's governance structure was just... fundamentally broken from day one. seven years running a ponzi with zero protocol checks? that's not fraud, that's literally a failed fork that nobody bothered to audit. 17 bagholders could've seen this coming if they understood basic attack vectors on trust systems.
