The "nobles" of decentralized storage are truly expensive—Filecoin's pricing is constantly changing, and Arweave's fees are so high that many small and medium projects are discouraged. But recently, in the Sui ecosystem, a new player called Walrus Protocol has broken this cycle with a set of RedStuff erasure coding technology.
The most direct comparison: storing the same data, Walrus's redundancy cost is only one five-hundredth of Arweave's. To understand this in practical terms—if you upload a 1GB NFT resource pack, it might cost dozens of dollars on Arweave, but only a few cents on Walrus. This is not just cheaper; the key is that data security is actually higher. Even if two-thirds of the nodes go offline simultaneously, the files can still be recovered, thanks to its special redundancy design.
What's more interesting is that Walrus breaks the traditional "storage is cold storage" mindset. It allows data to be called and programmed directly through Sui's smart contracts. What does this mean? If you upload a set of AI training data, it can be automatically licensed and paid for via smart contracts, or the NFT metadata can be updated in real-time based on on-chain conditions—creating a complete closed loop from storage to application without intermediaries.
From an application perspective, Walrus has already partnered with multiple projects in game asset storage and AI model repositories. As the Sui ecosystem expands, the demand for such underlying storage solutions will only grow stronger. For projects that need to control costs, ensure high availability, and seamlessly integrate with on-chain applications, Walrus is definitely worth a deep dive.
