nOctra has recently gained popularity. What are its main selling points? Essentially, it’s a project that has developed an L1 public chain based on homomorphic encryption, using a self-developed hypergraph cryptography scheme. The mainnet alpha was launched in mid-December, and the performance data looks promising—reporting a throughput of 17,000 TPS and handling over 100 million transactions.
It sounds impressive, but we need to take a closer look. There are quite a few considerations when it comes to risks. First, this cryptography scheme has not undergone independent audits, which is a major concern. Cryptographic algorithms are critical—any small vulnerability can be fatal. The team has even publicly disclosed some vulnerabilities found during the proof-of-concept stage. Additionally, the project has no revenue yet, but its valuation has already soared to $200 million. The bubble size is something to be aware of.
There are also two pitfalls: one is the somewhat turbulent fundraising history, with multiple delays in the ICO, which understandably impacts investor confidence; the other is the regulatory environment, which remains entirely uncertain. Large-scale encrypted computations currently lack clear regulatory frameworks worldwide. How far projects like nOctra can go remains unpredictable.
Overall, this is a technically cutting-edge project, but from an investment perspective, the risks and opportunities are equally significant.
