In the world of Web3, there is a long-standing pain point—are the images, videos, and NFT metadata you upload truly secure?

To be honest, most project storage solutions still follow the old approach: storing all data on a company's servers. Once the server fails, is censored, or the company goes bankrupt, your data becomes adrift. This risk is unacceptable in Web3.

There is a protocol in the Sui ecosystem that is rewriting this game rule. Its core idea is ingenious—it’s not about putting all eggs in one basket, but encrypting your files, breaking them into fragments, and dispersing them across thousands of nodes worldwide. Even if hundreds of nodes fail simultaneously, your data can still be fully reconstructed. This approach is called erasure coding technology, combined with Blob storage architecture, elevating the security, privacy, and economic efficiency of decentralized storage to a new level.

Developers no longer need to worry about infrastructure outages, and users don’t have to fear arbitrary data tampering or control. The cost of storing large files drops significantly, which is a boon for projects with high storage demands like gaming, NFTs, and RWA assets.

The ecosystem’s operation requires fuel. Here, the token plays multiple roles—paying for storage fees, staking nodes, governance voting, and incentivizing contributors. As more DApps, NFT projects, and on-chain assets choose this path, the token’s use cases will continue to expand, reflecting the overall value potential of the underlying storage infrastructure.

Erasure coding sounds impressive, but how many can actually run successfully?

This is true Web3 indeed. Finally, someone has solved the storage issue.

The concept of erasure coding should have been popularized long ago. Sui finally did some work this time.

Erasure coding is truly awesome; finally, someone has figured out how to master storage.

Someone should have addressed this issue earlier; those previous centralized storage solutions were really ridiculous.

ngl, erasure coding isn't exactly novel—been around since like 2015. what actually matters here is whether the token incentive structure avoids the usual velocity trap. sounds promising on paper but let's see if adoption follows the hype or if we're looking at another ponzinomics disguised as infrastructure
