The U.S. Court of Appeals allows Trump's tariffs to temporarily remain in effect.
On Thursday, local time, a federal appeals court suspended a group of judges’ rulings that forced Trump to suspend several tariffs imposed on international trade partners. In a brief ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said: “The judgments and permanent injunctions rendered by the Court of International Trade in these cases will be temporarily suspended until further notice, while the Court considers whether enforcement of the award should be suspended for a longer period of time.” The decision delays the lower court’s ruling until at least June 9, when the parties will submit legal arguments on whether the case should be suspended, and the appellate court will weigh the issues in the case. In yesterday’s ruling, a judge at the U.S. Court of International Trade found that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which Trump cited in multiple of his executive orders, did not “grant the president unlimited tariff powers.”
