During an interview on NBC News’ "Meet the Press" broadcast on Sunday, when asked whether he would fire Powell before 2026, President Trump gave the clearest negative answer yet: "No, no, no. Why would I do that? I can wait; it won't be long before there’s a change anyway." However, he also criticized Powell as someone who completely lacks flexibility and reiterated his call for The Federal Reserve to lower interest rates. Trump stated in the interview, "He should lower interest rates, and he will do it sooner or later. But Powell is not my fan; he doesn’t like me because I think he’s a total fool." This interview marks the first time Trump has so clearly expressed that Powell will continue in his position, which may help ease market concerns over Trump's disruption of the global trade system through large-scale tariff policies.
