New Trends in the Sui Ecosystem: Analysis of the Decentralization Storage Solution Walrus
The decentralized storage network Arweave has successfully achieved a rebound in token prices, ecosystem, and attention through the launch of its computing layer AO. As a general-purpose computing public chain, the decentralized storage network Walrus launched by Sui has also attracted industry attention.
Project Background
Walrus is a decentralized storage network launched by Mysten Labs, classified as a "protocol, platform" product. Mysten Labs is the development company behind Sui, with most of its founders and employees coming from Meta's defunct blockchain project Diem.
Walrus is built on Sui, utilizing Sui to coordinate the sale of storage space and metadata. However, using Walrus does not require building applications or products on Sui. Walrus will launch an independent governance token, WAL, to be used as a functional token.
Technological Innovation
Walrus has launched a new 2D encoding algorithm called RedStuff, specifically designed for Byzantine fault tolerance. RedStuff is based on fountain codes, combining the advantages of fast operation and high reliability.
By adopting this innovative erasure coding technology, Walrus can quickly and robustly encode unstructured data blocks into smaller shards and distribute them across a node network. Even if up to two-thirds of the shards are lost, the original data can be quickly reconstructed using partial shards. This approach keeps the replication factor at 4 to 5 times, comparable to existing cloud services, while also providing the advantages of Decentralization and greater fault tolerance.
RedStuff encodes data into primary and secondary slices using simple XOR operations. These slices are distributed across storage nodes, with each node holding a unique combination. For encoding in different dimensions, RedStuff uses different thresholds, achieving asynchronous writes and asynchronous storage proofs, while maintaining a low overall replication factor.
Core Advantages
Fast encoding/decoding speed: Compared to RS coding, using simple XOR operations improves processing speed.
High scalability and fault tolerance: Due to low storage overhead, the system can scale to hundreds of nodes and ensure data recovery in the event of Byzantine faults.
Efficient committee reconfiguration: Addressing the natural attrition of storage nodes to ensure continuous data availability.
Asynchronous Challenge Protocol: Verify whether the validation nodes correctly store data, ensure data availability, and the cost expands logarithmically with the number of stored files.
Innovative economic model: Based on staking, combined with reward and penalty mechanisms, it reduces the cost of storing proof documents.
Future Outlook
Walrus is expected to launch its testnet soon, with the mainnet launch date to be determined. The project will issue an independent token WAL for staking, governance, and other functions. Holding SUI may be a way to receive WAL airdrops, but the specific details have not yet been announced.
Walrus, as a scalable, highly flexible, and economically viable Decentralization storage solution, is expected to provide storage services with high authenticity, integrity, auditability, and availability at a reasonable cost. With the launch of the testnet and the mainnet, Walrus will bring new possibilities to the Sui ecosystem and inject new vitality into the field of Decentralization storage.
