P'Nut the Squirrel's owner sues New York State for $10 million due to a raid and extermination incident.
On August 12, following an anonymous complaint, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation conducted a five-hour raid on Mark Luongo's residence, seizing the internet celebrity squirrel Peanut (nicknamed 'P'Nut') and its partner, raccoon Fred. The state government subsequently euthanized both animals under the pretext of 'rabies testing.' DEC officials claimed that during the raid, 'P'Nut' bit through a thick leather glove worn by an officer, necessitating the killing of the squirrel and raccoon and rabies testing. However, the state later admitted that both animals tested negative and never apologized or returned the remains of the pets. According to court documents, the deaths of 'P'Nut' and Fred were 'not out of concern for rabies' but rather 'an act of senseless violence' and 'a shocking display of government abuse of power.' This lawsuit was added to one filed on June 27 of this year by Longo and Bittner against the City of Elmira and 36 officials at various levels of state and city government in Chemung County, New York, seeking unspecified damages through a jury trial. The couple stated that they have suffered emotional distress and financial loss since the loss of their star squirrel. According to the complaint, 'P'Nut' frequently appeared on social media (including OnlyFans).
