SMX (Security Matters) has collaborated with Singapore-based Bio-Packaging to introduce molecularly traceable sustainable packaging.

This partnership integrates SMX's invisible molecular marker into Bio-Packaging's polyethylene, post-consumer recycled (PCR) product lines during the extrusion process.

It will allow for the validation of recycled-content claims and extended producer responsibility (EPR) compliance by pairing sustainable materials and physical-to-digital authentication.

Every scan allows for the creation of a tamper-proof digital twin to SMX's blockchain platform at various stages, including production, distribution, point of sale, and end-of-life.

This provides regulators and brand owners with real-time verified proof of the product's origin, type of material, and recycling loops, alongside composting outcomes.

By combining the SMX marker with Bio-Packaging's eco-friendly solutions, the partnership could transform each bag into an asset that verifies its sustainability credentials.

Some of the key features of this collaboration include drop-in marking, where SMX's marker is added during the production of films or bags without changing the performance of the material.

The data collected is designed to align with Singapore's upcoming EPR scheme for packaging and is intended to support global plastic-tax reporting.

Furthermore, the embedded metadata provides anti-greenwashing assurance, substantiating claims of biodegradability and recycled content.

Bio-Packaging business development director Lim Qin Jie said: "Our customers trust us for practical, cost-effective packaging that meets Singapore's high environmental standards.

"By fusing SMX's traceability technology with our PCR, biodegradable and compostable offerings, we can now deliver indisputable evidence that each product lives up to its eco-promise."

Looking to the future, SMX and Bio-Packaging are expected to empower local converters with verifiable data to hasten Singapore's shift towards a zero-waste, high-value circular economy.

They also plan to collaborate with industry groups and government agencies to expand the platform across different substrates and end-use sectors.

"SMX and Bio-Packaging partner to introduce sustainable packaging" was originally created and published by Packaging Gateway, a GlobalData owned brand.
