Korea's January birth population increased by 11.7%, the largest growth in seven years

The data released by South Korea’s statistics office on Wednesday showed that this year’s growth rate in the number of newborns recorded in January hit the highest point in seven years.

The data showed that in January, South Korea had 26,916 babies born, up 11.7% year over year.

South Korea’s statistics office said that the number of newborns in January was the highest since January 2019, when 30,271 babies were born. The Ministry of Health noted that the number of newborns is gradually recovering to pre-pandemic levels.

Since July 2024, the number of newborns in South Korea has been on an upward trend.

South Korea’s total fertility rate in January (the expected average number of children a woman will have over her lifetime) reached 0.99, up 0.1 from the same period last year.

South Korea’s statistics office said that the recent rise in the birth rate appears to be affected by the continued increase in the number of marriages, government policies supporting childbirth, and the growth of the female population in its early 30s.
