胖东来 says its egg testing results are compliant, and accuses Wang Hai’s team of misleading the public.

In the “lutein yellow” egg incident, the key party—胖东来—has finally spoken out.

On the evening of April 5,胖东来’s official account released a 97-page statement, saying it had tested the egg products of multiple brands it sells and the breeding feed used, and that the results for all were compliant. In the statement,胖东来 accused Wang Hai’s team of misleading the public’s understanding, and said it would safeguard its rights through legal channels in accordance with the law.

The statement shows that after Wang Hai’s team released the relevant videos,胖东来 set up an investigation team and had the eggs from brands such as 正大、德青源、黄天鹅 sent for inspection, which was completed on April 3, with results found to be compliant in all cases. At the same time,胖东来 conducted checks on three manufacturers—正大、野迹鸣、德青源—and took four samples of finished feed products from each manufacturer for inspection; the results were all compliant.

A reporter, in some of the inspection reports published by胖东来, found that lutein yellow was not detected in the 黄天鹅 egg samples, while small amounts of lutein yellow were found in the eggs from 正大 and 德青源.

In its statement,胖东来 said lutein yellow (scarlet yellow) is a carotenoid compound that can be obtained through chemical synthesis and is also widely present in nature. In China, lutein yellow is considered a legal feed additive. According to the《Feed Additive Safety and Use Regulations》: the maximum permitted level in feed for laying hens and poultry is 8 mg/kg. For the lutein yellow content in fresh eggs, China currently does not have any requirements. Based on the FAO/WHO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization) assessment conclusions, the tolerable daily intake of lutein yellow is 0–0.03 mg/kg of body weight. Taking a 70 kg adult as an example, the maximum lutein yellow that can be safely consumed per day is 2.1 mg.

The statement says that, with respect to the “Wang Hai evaluation,” under the premise that it had not verified anything with胖东来 and without any official authoritative conclusions, by publishing a video on an online platform and using derogatory terms such as “dyed eggs” and “over-limit” wording, it directly equated the detection of lutein yellow in eggs with artificial addition, mixing up the standards for feed additives and food standards, and misled the public’s understanding of lutein yellow. At the same time, this also caused negative impacts on egg manufacturers’ brand reputations and the industry’s market order. For the alleged infringement and false information mentioned above,胖东来 has collected evidence and will safeguard its rights through legal channels in accordance with the law.
