Elon Musk: The world's most advanced humanoid robot, Tesla Optimus 3, will go into production this summer
IT Home on March 12 reported that Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that Optimus 3 (the third-generation “Optimus”) is expected to begin production this summer. Musk revealed this latest progress during an interview at the “Prosperity Summit.”
According to Musk, Tesla has entered the final stage of Optimus 3 development. He described the robot as the most advanced humanoid robot in the world.
“We’ve entered the final completion stage of Optimus 3, and without a doubt it will become the most advanced robot in the world—no product can rival it. In fact, I have never seen any robot’s demonstration results that can compare to Optimus 3,” Musk said.
He also made expectations about the ramp-up pace of Optimus 3’s production capacity, saying that the initial output of this humanoid robot will be very low, but he also indicated that large-scale mass production may be achieved in 2027.
“I think we’ll start producing Optimus 3 in the summer this year, but the initial pace will be very slow, showing the typical S-curve of capacity growth in manufacturing. Around next summer, we should be able to achieve large-scale mass production,” he said.
Worth noting is that Musk revealed Tesla plans to iterate quickly on the robot, which may mean launching a new Optimus design every year.
“We’ll complete the design of Optimus 4 next year, and we’ll strive to release a completely new robot design every year,” Musk said.
IT Home noted that Tesla has set out broader plans to expand Optimus production scale beyond its first production line. Musk previously said that Optimus 4 will be produced at the Texas super factory, and output will increase significantly.
The robot’s initial production line is expected to be set up at Tesla’s Fremont factory. The company plans to build a production line there with an annual production capacity of as many as 1 million units of machines.
A larger-scale capacity expansion will be carried out at the Texas super factory. Musk previously disclosed that the factory may be able to achieve an annual production scale of 10 million machines in the future.
“We’re going to start the fastest capacity ramp-up schedule among all large-scale complex manufacturing products in history. First, we’ll build a line in Fremont with an annual production of 1 million units—that’s line one. Then we build here (in Texas) a line with an annual production of 10 million units,” Musk said earlier.
The above remarks suggest that Optimus 3 will most likely go into production at the Fremont factory, while Tesla’s larger-scale manufacturing layout will take shape as Optimus 4 is rolled out at the Texas super factory.
