UN Secretary-General Establishes Special Working Group on Strait of Hormuz Situation

On March 28, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Dujarric commented on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that as the conflict in the Middle East continues to evolve and potentially escalate, disruptions in maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a chain reaction in the coming months, affecting humanitarian needs and agricultural production. While Secretary-General Guterres is committed to making every effort to achieve a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the conflict, it is crucial to take immediate action to mitigate these consequences. To address these challenges, the Secretary-General has established a special working group. The group will be led by UN Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Office for Project Services, D’Silva. It will also include representatives from the UN Conference on Trade and Development, the International Maritime Organization, and the International Chamber of Commerce, and will invite other agencies to participate as needed.
