On March 27, during the 14th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao met with Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal. The two sides had in-depth discussions on topics such as China-India economic and trade relations and WTO reform. Chinese Ambassador to the WTO Li Yongjie participated in the meeting.

Wang Wentao stated that China and India are both important countries in the Global South, and the leaders of the two countries have reached a series of important consensus on China-India relations. Both sides are important economic and trade cooperation partners, closely cooperating under regional and multilateral frameworks to jointly safeguard the interests of developing members and uphold international fairness and justice. The Ministry of Commerce of China is willing to work with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India to follow the strategic guidance of the two leaders, play a good role as a “ballast” in bilateral economic and trade cooperation, and welcome the Indian side to actively participate in a series of activities such as “Shared Big Market · Export to China,” making good use of platforms like the China International Import Expo and the China-South Asia Expo to expand exports to China. China is willing to strengthen communication and cooperation with India to jointly uphold the basic principles and rules of the WTO, place development issues at the center, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing members, and promote practical results from the 14th Ministerial Conference, demonstrating historical responsibility.

Piyush Goyal stated that China is India’s second-largest trading partner, and the two countries will hold BRICS cooperation mechanism meetings in 2026 and 2027. Both sides should play a more important role in international economic and trade cooperation, jointly maintain international trade rules and a fair and just trading environment, and achieve a more balanced trade relationship.

Minister Wang Wentao also had an in-depth exchange of views with Minister Goyal on issues of mutual concern such as the “Investment Facilitation Agreement for Development” and most-favored-nation treatment.
