Ordos City, Zhungeer Banner, has another 5 million-ton coal mine!
(Source: Coal World)
On March 25, 2026, the Energy Bureau of Ordos City issued an official announcement, formally announcing the production capacity of 5 million tons per year and related information of Inner Mongolia Yidong Group Sunjiahao Coal Co., Ltd. coal mine. This marks that the Sunjiahao Coal Mine, after years of development and the full process of capacity verification approval, officially becomes another large-scale coal production mine in Ordos City with an annual capacity of 5 million tons, adding significant strength to regional energy supply and the high-quality development of the coal industry. This capacity verification was not achieved overnight, but is an important result after the Sunjiahao Coal Mine underwent resource integration, stable production, and upgrades. Its capacity increase from 3 million tons per year to 5 million tons per year also vividly reflects the large-scale and standardized development of the coal industry in Ordos City.
The Sunjiahao Coal Mine is located in Xuejiawan Town, Junggar Banner of Ordos City, and is the core coal production node in the northern part of the Junggar Coalfield, with its development starting from resource integration. The mine was formed from the integration and transformation of the former Sunjiahao Coal Mine and Niulian Gou Coal Mine. In December 2006, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Coal Industry Bureau approved the feasibility study report for the integration and transformation of the two mines, establishing a design production capacity of 3 million tons per year and delineating the core planning for mine construction. In July 2007, the preliminary design for mine expansion and the safety special report were approved, and construction officially began. By 2011, design modifications, engineering construction, and various acceptance work were completed, and in December of that year, the mine was awarded the “Safety Production License” and officially went into production, achieving a capacity scale of 3 million tons per year, which became the core production benchmark in the initial phase of mine operation.
In the more than ten years since production began, the Sunjiahao Coal Mine has conducted standardized production with a verified capacity of 3 million tons per year, using an inclined-vertical shaft single-level development method, primarily mining the 6th and 6th coal seams, equipped with a comprehensive mechanized mining process. As a low-gas mine, its production efficiency is outstanding, and it has also been awarded titles such as “Advanced Coal Mine” and “High Yield and High Efficiency Mine” by the Coal Industry Association. During this period, due to industry adjustments, production was suspended in February 2018 and entered an optimization and rectification phase. However, after completing all rectification work in October 2020, production resumed smoothly, still operating stably at a capacity of 3 million tons per year. The mine’s geological reserves of 250 million tons and recoverable reserves of 140 million tons also laid a solid resource foundation for future capacity increases.
With the rising demand for national and regional energy supply, as well as the continuous optimization of the mine’s own production conditions, the Sunjiahao Coal Mine officially initiated the capacity verification work, entering a new stage of expansion and upgrading. In March 2023, the Energy Bureau of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region officially approved and agreed to increase the capacity of the Sunjiahao Coal Mine to 5 million tons per year, and the mine immediately launched the corresponding expansion and upgrading project, with a core focus on upgrading production equipment for raw coal screening, crushing, and washing. The construction period is planned for 2023-2025. While promoting project construction, the mine strictly implements various industry regulatory requirements, has successively completed tasks related to resolving excess capacity, and compiled and obtained approval for the environmental impact report for 5 million tons per year. By September 2025, a safety status evaluation will be completed, and all issues will be rectified to ensure the compliance and safety of the capacity increase.
The official announcement from the Energy Bureau of Ordos City is the final implementation of the capacity verification work for the Sunjiahao Coal Mine at 5 million tons per year. The related announcement strictly follows the requirements of national and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region coal industry management documents such as “The National Energy Administration’s Notice on Improving the Coal Mine Capacity Registration Announcement System and Carrying Out Construction Coal Mine Capacity Announcement Work” and “The Ministry of Ecology and Environment, National Development and Reform Commission, National Energy Administration’s Notice on Further Strengthening the Management of Environmental Impact Assessment for Coal Resource Development,” ensuring the standardization, legality, and openness of the capacity verification work. The Energy Bureau of Ordos City also simultaneously released the “Detailed Registration Table of Production Elements for the Production Coal Mine” for the mine, providing a detailed record of the production-related elements of the mine to support subsequent standardized production.
