Soaring Oil Prices | Hong Kong Airlines Raises Fuel Surcharge Again

The situation in the Middle East remains tense, causing a surge in aviation fuel prices. Hong Kong Airlines, which increased its fuel surcharge last Thursday (12th), will raise it again tomorrow (18th).

Hong Kong Airlines announced that for short-haul flights, the fuel surcharge from Hong Kong to Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia will increase from HKD 212 to HKD 290, a rise of about 37%. Flights from Hong Kong to Taiwan will increase from HKD 182 to HKD 290, a 59% increase.

For long-haul flights, the surcharge from Hong Kong to Southwest Pacific, North America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (excluding Maldives, Bangladesh, and Nepal) will go up from HKD 739 to HKD 1,164, an increase of approximately 57.5%.

The fuel surcharge for flights from Hong Kong to Mainland China remains unchanged at HKD 190.

Cathay Pacific, HK Express, and Greater Bay Airlines will also adjust their fuel surcharges starting tomorrow

The other three local airlines, including Cathay Pacific, HK Express, and Greater Bay Airlines, have also announced adjustments to their fuel surcharges. Starting tomorrow, Cathay Pacific’s passenger fuel surcharge for short-haul flights will increase from HKD 142 to HKD 290, a 1.04 times increase. For medium-haul flights, it will rise from HKD 264 to HKD 541, and for long-haul flights, from HKD 569 to HKD 1,164, both nearly a 1.05 times increase. Flights from Hong Kong to Mainland China will remain at HKD 165.

HK Express will also raise its fuel surcharge starting tomorrow. Flights departing from Hong Kong to other regions (excluding Mainland China) will increase from HKD 140 to HKD 290, more than doubling. Flights from Hong Kong to Mainland China will stay at HKD 165. Flights returning to Hong Kong from Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia will also see an increase in fuel surcharges. The surcharge for flights departing from Japan, South Korea, Mainland China, and the Philippines remains unchanged.

Greater Bay Airlines will similarly adjust its fuel surcharge from HKD 142 to HKD 290 for flights departing from Hong Kong to other regions, more than doubling. Flights from Hong Kong to Mainland China will stay at HKD 165. Flights from Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Maldives returning to Hong Kong will also see an increase.
