March 16: Reasons Why Classes Were Suspended in Mexico
During the weekend of March 14 to 16, 2026, millions of elementary school students in Mexico experienced an extended break because the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) confirmed that classes were suspended nationwide. This long weekend was not accidental but the result of a civic commemoration established by law. Public sector employees also had the day off, turning Monday, March 16, into an official holiday that allowed entire families to enjoy three consecutive days without work or school activities.
Confirmed: Classes were suspended on Monday, March 16
According to the SEP’s 2025-2026 school calendar and the Federal Labor Law (LFT), Monday, March 16, was declared a mandatory rest day. This meant that millions of preschool, elementary, and secondary students had a three-day holiday: Saturday, March 14; Sunday, March 15; and Monday, March 16. School activities were completely suspended, allowing students to return to their classrooms on Tuesday, March 17.
This long weekend was one of two bridges scheduled by the SEP for March, just before the start of Holy Week vacations. The measure benefited both students and public sector workers, who also did not go to their workplaces.
Benito Juárez’s commemoration explains the March mega-bridge
The reason behind the suspension of classes on March 16 is the commemoration of Benito Juárez’s birthday, one of the most important civic dates in Mexico. Benito Juárez, a former president and a key historical figure in the construction of the modern Mexican state, was born on March 21. However, Mexican legislation implemented a practical adjustment: holidays falling on weekdays are moved to the third Monday of the respective month.
In 2026, this rule placed the official celebration on March 16, automatically creating an extended weekend. This legal mechanism allows civic commemorations to become opportunities for family rest and reflection on the historical importance of the dates celebrated. The measure reflects institutional recognition of key figures in Mexican history.
Calendar: Holy Week 2026 and the return to activities
After enjoying the long weekend of March 16, students had a regular week of classes before the 2026 Holy Week vacations. According to the official SEP calendar, these vacations started on Monday, March 30, and ended on Friday, April 10, 2026. The return to classrooms was scheduled for Monday, April 13, 2026.
This pattern of breaks strategically distributes rest periods throughout the school year, allowing students and teachers opportunities for relaxation and academic renewal. The combination of the March bridge and Holy Week vacations marked a significant rest period for the Mexican education sector.
