OpenAI Adjusts Stargate Strategy, Abandons Self-Built Data Centers, Computing Budget Reduced to $600 Billion
Odaily Planet Daily reports that according to 1M AI News monitoring, OpenAI has made significant adjustments to its Stargate computing infrastructure project, abandoning self-built data centers in favor of third-party cloud services such as AWS and Google Cloud for computing power. The company’s total computing expenditure forecast for 2030 has been reduced from previously $1.4 trillion to approximately $600 billion.
This adjustment is mainly driven by funding pressures. Since its proposal in 2025, the Stargate project has progressed slowly and has not secured large-scale construction financing. OpenAI has exited negotiations for expansion in Texas and has reached a new partnership model with SoftBank, where SoftBank is responsible for energy and facility development, while OpenAI secures computing resources through long-term leases.
Additionally, OpenAI is shifting its computing deployment to NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin platform, aiming to achieve its first gigawatt-scale computing capacity by the second half of 2026.
