REPORT | Solana Had the Second Largest Ecosystem of Total Monthly Active Developers in 2023 After Ethereum
The Solana developer ecosystem boasts more than 2,500 monthly active developers engaged in open-source repositories, Solana said in a report.
Solana’s native token SOL has surged by over 700% since reaching its market low at the end of 2022, with activity driven by dedicated developers working on interesting projects across the ecosystem. This drew the interest of Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum.
According to Solana Foundation, there is a continual influx of professional developers joining the ecosystem, and the developer environment is progressively maturing.
According to the report:
“This past year [2023], we have had a steady number of around 2500 – 3000 monthly active developers building on Solana throughout the year.
Moreover, throughout 2023, 3-month developer retention within the Solana ecosystem has increased from 31% to >50%, keeping more developers that join in the ecosystem.”
Solana has actively cultivated a good experience for developers by making onboarding easier and providing assistive documentation and scaffolding, making joining the ecosystem a clearer choice for developers.
Despite its relatively recent establishment, with the Solana mainnet beta going live in March 2020, the developer ecosystem has rapidly expanded, positioning it as the second-largest ecosystem in terms of total monthly active developers.
“Through multiple developer bootcamps that vary in focus and difficulty, there are 400 -500 senior developers graduating every 6 months with the intention of building on Solana. Data from the recent Solana Hyperdrive Hackathon shows that ~50% of the top 150 submissions and ~50% of the winners had completed one of these bootcamps.”

Over half of the developers entering the ecosystem possess a minimum of three years of experience, contributing to a more seasoned level of input in the development of applications on the network.
The Solana Foundation’s latest hackathon, HyperDrive, witnessed the participation of representatives from 151 countries. Among them, participants from 65 countries, including Nigeria, submitted final projects for consideration.
273 projects from Nigeria registered for the HyperDrive hackathon, with 41 submitting the projects while 2 are listed as winners.
