The Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA) announced on January 8th that the sales of imported cars (excluding Japanese manufacturers) in 2025 increased by 7% year-on-year, reaching 243,129 units. This is the first positive growth in two years. Among them, sales of pure electric vehicles (EVs) increased by 26%, reaching 30,513 units, setting a new record. The increase in sales of pure electric vehicles from manufacturers like Tesla in the United States has driven the overall growth.

Japan’s EV sales have increased for seven consecutive years. In 2025, EVs accounted for 13% of total sales, up 2 percentage points from the previous year. Tesla, Inc. did not disclose domestic sales in Japan, but the company’s sales in the “Others” category, which includes most of its models, grew by 88%, reaching 10,693 units. This means Tesla’s sales in Japan exceeded 10,000 units for the first time, and its brand ranking rose from 10th to 7th place last year.

BYD’s sales in Japan increased by 62%, reaching 3,870 units. The SUV “Sea Lion 7,” launched in April 2025, continues to sell well, significantly boosting sales. In summer 2026, BYD will launch the lightweight pure electric vehicle “Racco” in the Japanese market, aiming to further expand its market share.
