Abstract generation in progress

Tech employees at Google GOOGL -1.88% ▼ , OpenAI, and other AI firms are circulating open letters calling for clearer limits on military contracts. This comes after U.S. strikes on Iran and after the Pentagon labeled Anthropic a “supply chain risk.” One letter, titled “We Will Not Be Divided,” grew to nearly 900 signatures within days, including about 800 from Google and nearly 100 from OpenAI. Unsurprisingly, the letter criticizes the Defense Department’s actions against Anthropic, which has refused to allow its AI tools to be used for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.

Signers also argue that the government is pressuring companies and attempting to divide workers. In addition, the backlash intensified after the Pentagon blacklisted Anthropic shortly before combat operations in Iran began. While the government said that the strikes were carried out to prevent imminent threats, the move appeared to fuel more internal resistance within tech companies. Separately, this also caused advocacy group No Tech For Apartheid to urge Amazon AMZN -1.57% ▼ , Google, and Microsoft MSFT +0.14% ▲ to reject Defense Department terms that could allow for surveillance or abusive uses of AI.

Interestingly, the group pointed to reports that Google is in talks to deploy its Gemini model in classified Pentagon systems, similar to arrangements involving Elon Musk’s xAI. Moreover, internal tensions at Google have resurfaced, as more than 100 employees reportedly asked management to adopt red lines similar to Anthropic’s.

Are Google Shares a Good Buy?
