Mexican authorities have discovered 10 bodies during their investigation into the disappearance of workers from the Pánuco project, a mining operation run by Vizsla Silver in the northern state of Sinaloa. The remains were uncovered in the municipality of Concordia, the same area where workers were taken in late January. Camimex, Mexico’s national mining chamber, confirmed that at least three of the deceased were mining professionals: Ignacio Aurelio Salazar, José Ángel Hernández, and José Manuel Castañeda Hernández. The latter, a geologist by profession, was identified through his family members.

Speaking to media outlets, the brother of Castañeda Hernández expressed the family’s anguish over the discovery. “In truth, this has been very painful to be here, in a place where we don’t want to be. There is no justice with what is happening,” he shared in an interview with CBC News. His words reflected the deep trauma affecting not only the families but the broader mining community in the region.

Vizsla Silver’s Response and Operational Changes

Vizsla Silver, the Vancouver-based mining company operating the site, issued a statement acknowledging the tragic outcome. The company announced it remains in contact with Mexican authorities and is awaiting official verification before making further disclosures. Since the abductions occurred on January 23, Vizsla Silver has maintained a suspension of all operations at its Pánuco project.

Michael Konnert, Vizsla Silver’s President and CEO, expressed the company’s sorrow in a formal statement: “We are devastated by this outcome and the tragic loss of life. Our deepest condolences are with our colleagues’ families, friends and co-workers, and the entire community of Concordia.” Beyond offering condolences, the company has committed to supporting the affected families and prioritizing the search for any workers who may still be missing.

Cartel Conflict at the Core of the Kidnapping Investigation

Early investigative findings suggest that the kidnapping is linked to an internal power struggle within the Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico’s most powerful organized crime organizations. The tensions, which intensified throughout 2024, pit competing factions: one loyal to the sons of imprisoned cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán against a rival faction connected to the family of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.

Mexico’s Security and Civilian Protection Secretary, Omar Harfuch, has indicated that authorities suspect a cell affiliated with Los Chapitos—the faction representing El Chapo’s heirs—orchestrated the kidnapping. According to analysts, the assault may have been designed to demonstrate territorial strength in a strategically vital region, with mining operations potentially serving as either targets or collateral victims in the broader cartel dispute.

Government Security Escalation

In response to the kidnapping and ongoing instability, the Mexican government has substantially increased its military presence in Sinaloa. Over the past weekend from the time of reporting, authorities deployed more than 1,000 troops, including marine forces, to locate missing workers and restore security to the area. Additionally, officials have arrested four individuals in connection with the case as investigations continue.
