Eastern Time February 5th, the U.S. State Department issued a security alert through the “Virtual U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran,” stating that security measures across Iran continue to be strengthened, and the situation remains tense.

The U.S. urges American citizens to leave Iran as soon as possible on their own and to develop departure plans that do not rely on U.S. government assistance. If immediate departure is not possible, they should seek safety locally, stock necessary supplies, avoid demonstrations, and keep a low profile.

The announcement emphasizes that individuals with dual U.S.-Iranian citizenship must exit using their Iranian passports. Iran does not recognize dual nationality, and U.S. citizens face a higher risk of interrogation and detention locally.

As of now, land border crossings between Iran and Armenia, Turkey remain open; departure via Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan requires prior special permission. The U.S. also reminds American citizens not to travel to Afghanistan, Iraq, or the border regions between Iran and Pakistan.

Due to the lack of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Iran, the Swiss Embassy in Tehran provides limited assistance as the U.S. interests section. The U.S. State Department urges Americans in Iran to closely monitor the situation and leave as soon as conditions permit.
