Ethereum developers are busy preparing for the next major upgrade. The hard fork codenamed Glamsterdam is expected to debut in the first half of 2026, marking another step in Ethereum's two-year upgrade cycle following the Fusaka upgrade at the end of 2025.
This upgrade aims to accomplish three main goals: boost the fundamental performance of Layer 1, enhance decentralization, and fundamentally address the issues of centralization and fairness caused by MEV (Maximum Extractable Value).
Let's take a look at the changes. Perfect parallel processing is a big move—multiple independent transactions can now run simultaneously, directly increasing throughput. Some estimates suggest that, combined with other optimizations, Ethereum L1's TPS could approach the target of 10,000. This will be a significant improvement over the current congestion and high Gas fees.
The Gas limit will also be substantially increased. From the current 60 million, it will be raised to 100 million, and possibly even to 200 million—representing a 233% increase. The number and complexity of transactions per block will rise, and peak Gas fee pressures will be noticeably alleviated.
Additionally, the core feature Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (ePBS) is under development. This is a key step in solving Ethereum's centralization issues. While the details are still being finalized, the goal is clear—to make the roles of proposers and builders more separated and transparent, fundamentally weakening the negative impact of MEV.
Currently, these upgrade plans have received broad consensus or high recognition from Ethereum core developers, and the technical roadmap is quite clear. In the first half of 2026, Ethereum will undergo a substantial capacity upgrade.
