Can Ethereum become the "heartbeat of the world"? Vitalik discusses the balance between scalability and decentralization

【Blockchain Rhythm】How should Ethereum improve its scalability? Vitalik has recently had new thoughts on this question.

His core point is quite interesting—rather than solely pursuing lower latency, it’s more reliable to focus on increasing bandwidth. Why? Because latency is constrained by hard limits such as the speed of light, node distribution, censorship resistance, and economic costs, making it difficult to improve infinitely. On the other hand, there is greater room for bandwidth enhancement. Technologies like PeerDAS and ZKPs can theoretically achieve thousands of times of scalability while maintaining decentralization.

This is based on a deep philosophy—Ethereum should be as reliable and stable as the “world heartbeat,” rather than being used as a high-performance game server. If an application truly requires such high speed, then it should consider off-chain solutions, such as layer 2 networks. This also explains why, even if Ethereum itself achieves significant scalability, layer 2 ecosystems will continue to exist and develop. The two are actually complementary in their roles.

Oh, now I finally understand. It's not about racing speed; bandwidth is the key. Vitalik's approach this time is a bit brilliant. Nothing can stop the speed of light, so why bother with latency... It's better to honestly focus on increasing bandwidth. Things like PeerDAS are truly where the blossoms are in full bloom. Layer 2 will always be alive, and this prediction seems to be correct.

Haha, still talking about delays? I just smile. Even at the speed of light, you can't stop it, and now you want to chase milliseconds... This idea of bandwidth is truly brilliant. With PeerDAS, Ethereum can really breathe.

Oh wow, that logic is indeed clear... bandwidth > latency, the speed of light is the ceiling.

Honestly, V神's thinking is still clear. The judgment that bandwidth > latency is correct; we can't change the speed of light.

Vitalik, I have to say that the logic is still clear. Bandwidth is indeed much easier to handle than latency. No one can bypass the speed of light limit.

Ha, finally someone said it. Latency really kills everything; even light speed can't save it. Bandwidth is the real king. PeerDAS is truly excellent; thousands of times scalability without losing decentralization. Just thinking about it is awesome. The analogy of the world's heartbeat is perfect. Don't always think about being a game server; just doing one layer well is enough. Layer 2 continuing to live is inevitable. Prioritize L1 stability, and meet speed requirements accordingly, with clear division of labor. Vitalik's approach this time is really smooth; finally not just piling up parameters blindly.
