Ethereum completes Fusaka upgrade final phase; secondary BPO fork significantly enhances Layer 2 capacity limits
January 8th news, the Ethereum network successfully executed the second planned "Blob parameters" (BPO) fork. This lightweight upgrade not only marks the conclusion of the Fusaka upgrade initiated in December last year but also, by allowing the Ethereum network to flexibly adjust specific parameters (such as blob targets), lays a solid foundation for sustainable expansion of the Layer 2 ecosystem.
This BPO parameter fork increased the target Blob count per block from 10 to 14, and the maximum count from 15 to 21. This is also another expansion following the first BPO adjustment on December 9th.
Blob is a dedicated temporary data storage unit designed for Ethereum Layer 2 Rollups. By packaging transaction data into Blobs and submitting them to the mainnet via Rollup, it ensures data availability at extremely low costs.
Therefore, the increase in Blob capacity directly translates to more abundant and cheaper data space for Layer 2 networks, helping to further reduce user transaction costs.
The core goal of the Fusaka upgrade is to systematically enhance Ethereum’s data availability layer. In addition to introducing the flexible BPO adjustment mechanism, this upgrade also includes important improvements to PeerDAS (Peer-to-Peer Data Availability Sampling) technology.
This technology allows nodes to verify the validity of entire Blobs by sampling random data samples, without downloading all data, greatly reducing the burden on network nodes and serving as the foundation for sustainable Blob capacity expansion.
In summary, from the introduction of PeerDAS to phased implementation of BPO expansion, the Fusaka upgrade demonstrates that Ethereum is advancing through modular, incremental technological iterations, continuously optimizing the infrastructure performance of the Layer 2 "settlement and data availability layer," thereby opening a clear development path.
This sustainable and optimized expansion approach aims to ensure the network remains stable and efficient amid surging ecosystem demands, laying a solid foundation for next-stage scaled applications.
