Brazilian Presidential Candidate Writes "National Bitcoin Reserve" into Campaign Promises
Recently, Brazilian presidential candidate Renan Santos publicly called for Brazil to follow El Salvador's example and establish a "National Bitcoin Strategic Reserve." As the founder of the "Mission Party" and a right-wing politician, Santos stated that his policy inspiration comes from Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele. He characterized this plan as "feasible" and has included it in his draft campaign promises.
Santos's proposal reflects the growing policy inclination within Brazil. Just a few months ago, a legislator submitted a bill requiring the Ministry of Finance to purchase Bitcoin, and Congress held hearings on this topic. In addition to the Bitcoin reserve plan, Santos emphasized that blockchain technology is an excellent tool to combat public sector corruption, as it can significantly increase the difficulty of embezzlement.
It is worth noting that Santos has long been known for his radical positions, which often spark controversy. He has advocated for Brazil to develop nuclear weapons in response to the U.S. arrest of Venezuelan President Maduro, and has openly stated that "sovereignty is built on strength." Elevating Bitcoin reserves to a national strategic level is a natural extension of his consistent pursuit of national financial sovereignty and defense capabilities.
In summary, Santos's remarks, along with the previous suggestion by Brazil's largest bank analyst for depositors to allocate assets in Bitcoin, jointly mark the transition of digital asset issues from fringe discussions to mainstream political and financial agendas in Brazil. As the October general election approaches, Bitcoin is expected to become a central focus of the country's new policy debates.
