The Ethereum Foundation recently announced an important update called "Protocol Update 001 – Scale L1," detailing the latest progress in its L1 scaling efforts. Notably, Marius van der Wijden has joined the leadership team to advance this critical task alongside Ansgar Dietrichs and Tim Beiko.
This update involves optimizations at multiple technical levels. First, the mainnet gas limit has been raised to 45 million, with a future goal of reaching 100 million, which will significantly improve network processing capacity. Secondly, by implementing a historical data expiration mechanism, it is expected to save 300-500GB of storage space, and a related rolling expiration mechanism is also under development. Additionally, the introduction of Block Access Lists (BALs) aims to enhance parallel processing efficiency.
In terms of performance, the Ethereum Foundation is conducting benchmarking to optimize EVM performance while actively promoting the development of zkEVM certified client prototypes, aiming to achieve real-time verification. These initiatives will bring significant performance improvements to the Ethereum network.
It is worth mentioning that in June of this year, the Ethereum Foundation restructured its development team, focusing on L1 scaling, Blob scaling, and improvements in user experience. This strategic adjustment highlights the Foundation's commitment to enhancing the overall performance of the Ethereum ecosystem while ensuring network security and decentralization.
These measures will undoubtedly pave the way for the future development of Ethereum, and are expected to address the current scalability challenges, creating a better blockchain environment for users and developers. However, this process still requires time and continued effort, and we will wait with anticipation for the further evolution of the Ethereum network.
