The Japanese government strongly opposes the U.S. tariff policy and demands its cancellation.

The United States’ imposition of a 25% tariff on key automotive parts took effect on May 3. In response, Japan has continued to express strong opposition to the U.S. tariff policy. On the 3rd, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed regret over the U.S. starting to impose a 25% tariff on key automotive parts that day and will continue to urge the U.S. to reconsider the related tariff measures. Japan is negotiating with the U.S. regarding tariff measures that include automobiles, steel, and aluminum products. There are differences in positions between Japan and the U.S., and a Consensus has not yet been reached. Furthermore, according to a report by NHK on the 3rd, Japan’s Minister of Economic Revitalization, Ryota Akizawa, has returned to Japan after the second round of Japan-U.S. trade negotiations and introduced the relevant situation of the negotiations to reporters at the airport. Akizawa stated that Japan is concerned about the tariffs imposed by the U.S. on automobiles, automotive parts, steel, and aluminum, as well as the so-called “reciprocal tariff” policy, and will continue to strongly demand that the U.S. cancel these tariffs.
