The U.S. government terminates the legal identification of thousands of Syrian immigrants in the U.S.
On September 20, Jin10 reported that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian immigrants, stating that continuing to maintain the humanitarian program "is not in the interests of the United States." DHS spokesperson McLaughlin emphasized that TPS is a temporary status and cannot be used as a pathway for long-term residency in the U.S. It is reported that this decision affects approximately 4,000 Syrians holding TPS, whose status will expire in 60 days, and if they do not obtain other legal status, they may face arrest or deportation. The U.S. government also suggested they "voluntarily depart." The Syrian TPS program was established in 2012 by the Obama administration to address the situation in the Syrian civil war at the time, and it has been extended multiple times, including during Trump's first term.
