Driven by the AI data center boom, Samsung Electronics has increased the prices of memory chips.
According to Deep Tide TechFlow news on November 14, two informed sources revealed that Samsung Electronics raised the prices of certain memory chips this month due to a supply shortage caused by the global boom in building AI data centers, with the increased chip prices rising by up to 60% compared to September. They stated that this move occurred after the chip manufacturer decided to postpone the official announcement of supply contract pricing for October and added that pricing details are usually published monthly. Tobey Gonnerman, president of semiconductor distributor Fusion Worldwide, said, “Many of the largest server manufacturers and data center builders now accept that they will not be able to obtain sufficient products, and the premiums paid are very high.” He indicated that the contract price of Samsung's 32GB DDR5 memory chip module jumped to $239 in November, up from $149 in September. DDR memory chips are used in servers, computers, and other devices to temporarily store data and manage fast data transfer and retrieval, assisting in enhancing computing performance. Samsung also raised the prices of 16GB DDR5 and 128GB DDR5 chips by about 50%, reaching $135 and $1194, respectively. Gonnerman noted that the prices of 64GB DDR5 and 96GB DDR5 chips increased by more than 30%. (Jin10)
